Young People Learn About High Tech Careers and Earn Laptops
Hard work and motivation paid off for 57 exceptional students from the Urban League of Rochester’s Summer Technical Institute and Technology Clubs when they were rewarded with their own laptop computers. The program, which provided an eight-week summer institute at Monroe Community College’s Applied Technology Center, as well as an afterschool program at the Urban League, awarded laptops to students who completed all program requirements.
The program gave students the chance to learn about high tech growth industries and take labs in the areas of Engineering Design, Architectural Design, Manufacturing Concepts, and Information Technology. The students toured local companies and researched careers in fields including Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Programming, Forensic Science and Optics. They were also engaged in exercises in effective communication, teamwork, and making positive choices.
In all, 80 students ages 16 to 20 participated in the program. The majority are minorities and almost half are from low-income families. All are excellent students with GPAs of at least 2.6. The Urban League is proud to have helped these promising young people prepare for futures in high tech industries. The Urban League is one of five organizations receiving funding from Finger Lakes Wired to provide youth with opportunities to expand their skills in high-tech, high-growth industries.
